Private Keelboat Lessons – Tailored Coaching for Adults.
Personalized Progression on the Surprise
Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced sailor looking to sharpen your skills, our private lessons on the Surprise are designed to meet your specific goals. This legendary Lake Geneva keelboat is the perfect platform for technical yet secure learning. With a private instructor dedicated entirely to your progress, you will achieve your objectives twice as fast, whether you are sailing solo or in a small private group.
Why Choose Crans for Your Private Coaching?
Located in the heart of Terre-Sainte, our nautical base provides immediate access to the Petit-Lac. This means you spend your time sailing rather than navigating busy harbors or dealing with the heavy boat traffic often found in Nyon or Founex. Our location offers a wide-open sailing area, ideal for practicing maneuvers with total peace of mind. For the Terre-Sainte international community, it is the premier choice for those seeking maximum flexibility and a boutique club atmosphere.
The SUPRISE: The benchmark sailing boat on Lake Geneva.

- Overall length 7.65 m
- Width (Bau) 2.48 m
- Draft 1.60 m
- Total weight Approx. 1,250 kg
Number of crew members: 1 to 5
Sail Areas
- Upwind sail area Approx. 33.5 m2
- Spinnaker Approx. 45 m2
- Responsiveness and Precision: The Surprise is a "lively" boat that reacts immediately to every sail adjustment and every movement of the tiller. It is the ideal vessel for understanding the finer points of sailing and acquiring the right reflexes.
- Exam Standard: By completing your training on a Surprise, you will learn on the model of boat most commonly used by SAN experts. On exam day, you will be on familiar ground, which significantly reduces stress.
- Versatility: Both safe for beginners and technical for racers, it allows you to progress quickly, from your first harbor maneuvers to perfect mastery of the spinnaker.
- A shared future: As the most common sailboat on Lake Geneva, learning on a Surprise opens the door to future sailing opportunities: it will be very easy to rent one or join crews after obtaining your license.
Sailing Discovery.
Perfect for beginners or those returning to the sport after a long break. These sessions are all about getting comfortable on the water. You will learn the basics of the Surprise keelboat, including essential nautical terms, how to steer (helming), and basic maneuvers like tacking and gybing. Our goal is to give you a "hands-on" experience in the safe and scenic waters of Terre-Sainte, ensuring you feel confident and inspired by your first tacks.
Pleasure Outings.
No stress, just the joy of being on Lake Geneva. These sessions are designed for those who want to sail without the pressure of a formal curriculum. Enjoy a private cruise with an instructor who handles the technicalities while you participate as much or as little as you like. It’s the perfect way to explore the Terre-Sainte coastline from the water, enjoy the fresh breeze, and escape the bustle of neighboring Nyon or Founex for a few hours of pure relaxation.
Advanced Coaching & Performance.
Designed for sailors looking to sharpen their edge. This section is highly technical and focused on results. Whether you are preparing for the Swiss Sailing License (Permis Voile), mastering the symmetrical spinnaker, or learning fine-tuning for racing, our professional coaching provides the expert feedback you need. We focus on boat speed, precision maneuvers, and autonomous boat handling, giving you the skills to excel on the water.
How to dress?
- Self-inflating life jacket: provided by the Crans Nautical Club and serviced each season.

- Windbreaker jacket: Waterproof clothing to protect you from spray and wind, even in good weather.
- Technical pants: Comfortable pants that dry quickly (avoid jeans, which become heavy and cold when wet).
-
- Sailing gloves: Highly recommended for handling the sheets and protecting your hands from rope burns. They are provided on the boat.
- Insulating layer: A fleece or light sweater (it is always cooler on the water than in the harbor).
- Sun protection: Sunglasses with safety cord, cap, and sunscreen.
- Waterproof boots or socks: Optional, for those moving from Intermediate to Advanced. We are starting to do abseiling...
