Sailing on Lake Geneva is a privilege that a motorboat license makes possible. At the Cercle Nautique de Crans, we prepare you to obtain your motorboat license (category A).
Whether you are a beginner or want to perfect your maneuvers, our qualified instructors will provide you with customized training. We emphasize safety, knot tying, and the essential harbor maneuvers you need to pass your practical exam.
Why choose us.
- Idyllic setting: Lessons starting from the port of Crans, Nyon, Founex or Prangins.
- Local expertise: Thorough knowledge of the specific characteristics of sailing on Lake Geneva.
- Flexibility: Time slots tailored to your availability.
- Appropriate tools: For better monitoring and working at home
Here is the essential equipment you will need for your motorboat license lessons:
- Windproof and waterproof jacket: Essential for protection from wind chill and sea spray, even in good weather.
- Thermal layer (fleece): On a motorboat, you remain stationary at the helm; it is always cooler on the water than on land.
- Clean athletic shoes: Sneakers with non-slip soles (avoid hard or marking soles).
- Sunglasses: The glare on the lake is intense and can interfere with visibility of buoys or other users.
- Sun protection: Sunscreen and a hat (be careful, it can easily blow away when you're moving fast!).
- Notepad and pen: Useful for noting visual cues specific to exam maneuvers.
Frequently asked questions.
To obtain a category A license (engine over 6 kW), you must be at least 18 years of age.
The Theory Test must be passed in order to schedule an appointment for the Practical Exam. This is something to take seriously early on in your Motorboat License project. Even without having passed the Theory Test, you can already take Motorboat License lessons. This generally allows you to understand certain theoretical aspects required for the exam.
The number of hours depends on each student. The SAN recommends an average of 14 to 16 hours of practice to master all the exam maneuvers (man overboard, docking, parking, etc.). This is an average. At the Crans Nautical Club, we generally offer around 12 hours of lessons.
The exam is scheduled to last one hour. If everything goes well, it may even be shorter. The examiner will ask you to do all the recommended exercises, which we have worked on during the lessons.
Be mindful of stress on the day of the exam. Our instructors are here to prepare you for this milestone. And remember: you are taking the Motorboat License exam for your enjoyment and leisure.
The Motorcycle License is mainly French spoken in Terre-Sainte. We mainly teach courses in this language. We can also start courses in English and gradually transition to French.
During the exam, you will be alone with the SAN expert. In exceptional circumstances, you may request that your instructor be present. This may be the case if you do not speak French at all, which is rare in the Holy Land.
On the day of the exam, a wind limit is imposed by the SAN Expert. During your training, we offer outings in strong winds to help you better understand the dynamics of motorboats in these conditions.
The exam takes place in the ports of Nyon, Prangins or Founex. As your training progresses, we will travel to the port chosen for your exam. Practicing in several ports will give you a more open mind and make it easier for you to adapt.
